Meet the Teacher: Christina King

ROLL CALL!!! Meet Christina King, teacher at Seaforth Public School, New South Wales.

Tragically Seaforth Public School was hit by an intense fire in September this year. Christina’s Year 2 classroom burnt down to the ground, along with 4 other classrooms from the school. This meant that the teachers and students from these classes lost ALL of their school supplies! Yoobi popped by that week to lend a hand at a time of need and dropped off classroom packs for each of these 5 classrooms. Each pack was filled to the brim with Yoobi goodies, which certainly helped pick up the spirits of the kids (and teachers) during this tough time.

What age/grade do you teach?
At the moment I am teaching Year 2.

What do you love most about teaching?
I love that my job is challenging. Finding new ways to stimulate the minds of my students and helping them learn challenges me to constantly think of new ideas to make learning fun. It is the most rewarding experience to see a student’s face when they have learnt something new or when they have a “light bulb” moment.

What made you become a teacher in the first place?
I was extremely lucky to have inspiring teachers in both primary school and high school. These teachers instilled a love of learning in me and I am forever appreciative of their hard work, dedication and positivity.

Does having access to school supplies really make a difference in your classroom, and to kids? If so, how?
As a teacher I want my students to have the best experience they can have in the classroom. To achieve this having adequate access to school supplies is vital. Not every family is able to provide what they would like for their child and it is important to bridge the gap so no student is disadvantaged.

Do you spend money out of your own pocket on core school supplies for your students? Would you mind sharing how much on average?
Each year I am surprised with the amount of money I spend on teaching resources and basic classroom items. Last year I spent close to $1,600 and the year before that around $1,800.

What have you done with the Yoobi Classroom Pack in your classroom?
My class were so thankful that Yoobi reached out to us and when we received our Yoobi Classroom Pack one of my students said “Miss King this is like Christmas morning!” Another teacher and myself packed all the Yoobi pencil cases with the stationery and handed them out to the students who couldn’t wait to start using everything!
